Was it uncertainty or a clever repudiation of the fact by Minister Bropleh?

It is a best practice in the process of nation building that the people learn the true historical account about themselves, as it means their salvation from ignorance to the radiance of knowledge. Incontrovertibly, there is much confusion among Liberians in the light of identifying their true identities, as witnessed during the civil crisis, due to our inferior historical knowledge of ourselves as taught by the founders of the Liberian nation.

The fact remains that indigenous Liberians have not been sufficiently informed about their cultural dimensions, tribal Kings and Queens ; the names of rivers and their meanings; the mountains and shrines; above all the tribal relationships as they converged. These are century old problems that need solutions if we must build a better Liberia.

However, glad tiding to the emerging advancement and affordability of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).We don’t have to be spectators to events of national importance as were the days of our forebears whom for religious orientation and/or their understanding of national politics surrendered to the will and delight of political leaders who strangled the pedigree of historical accounts relative to indigenous Liberians contributions to the formative stage of the Republic of Liberia.

In resent time, a popular DSTV channel called “African Magic” carried a documentary on Liberia past and present during which people of historical condiments were featured to provide factual accounts of major happenings such as the arrival of freed slaves from the Caribbean (Molattos), the ones from the United States (Americo-Liberians),and the last but popular grouping arrest on high seas (Congos),the independence of Liberia, the rise of the natives’ PRC, the rebel incursion of NPFL, the formation of ULIMO and its rebirth as LURD and other factions.

I was taken aback when the honorable minister of Information (Mr. Bropleh) referred to King Osman Kamara otherwise known as King Sao Bosso Kamara as Islamic King without giving much credibility to his contribution in brokering a rather rigid but timely negotiation between the settlers and the natives of the coastal land of Liberia. Our small history tells us that King Sao Bosso was the first native ruler who gave protection to the founders of the Liberian state and promised them the security they had never had from where they came.

I believe there is no such account (written or oral) that King Sao Bosso converted his subjects into Islam in any way that one will only think of him as “Islamic leader” as ascribed by the honorable Minister of Information. Quite frankly, it would have caused no sense of agitation had such pronouncement come from an obvious person rather than a supposedly intelligent, evenhanded, and a statesman like Minister Bropleh-a chief campaigner for “change in mind change in attitude.“

I’m not really trying to promote or show how gracious the Mandingos are, I’m only trying to point out that King Sao Bosso as far as his contribution during the fledgling period of settlers’ endeavors to creating a nation, has nothing to do with his religious affection whatsoever. During Sao Bosso’s unprecedented judgment on behalf of the settlers gave way to other arrangements leading to declaration of Liberia independence, a fact no thinkable person would refute. Such display of astuteness is by and large exemplary of a Mandingo Massah or Mandingo Leader. Such fair Judgment has been prevailing among the Mandingoes since 1216 when Sundiata Keita and his reliable General (Fakoli Kromah) trashed Sumanguron Nkante out of Mandingo or Mali empire. History has taught us that Mandingo Kings are characterized by generosity and kindness to their subjects and strangers.

The legendary King has fore knowledge of the slave trade. He knew that the settlers were once our brothers and sisters and that they will continue to be as long as their skins are black like ours. I believe that was the driving force behind his mediation as a noble Mandingo King.

Certainly, there is much correlation between the seemingly charlatan display by the honorable minister of information and the ungrateful and illegal change or replacement of King Sao Bosso Street to Front Street in central Monrovia. The many streets in and around Monrovia named after the settlers (Congos and the Americo-Liberians) retain their names even though some of them do not have any historical bearings on the country to glorify. These moves are mere counterfeiting of the reality to hide or smear the unprecedented contribution the natives have made.

Many native Kings have suffered the same fate like the ambiguous nomenclature ascribed to a certain "King Long Peter" in many of our limited history books. What a mockery and ludicrous name of an African King who had no known relationship with the western hemisphere having the title of a king but with a western name. These are situations that need thorough investigations to keep our record straight like other nations.

Lets us remember that a society where ungratefulness, prejudice, and insincerity are at their peaks, civility and good-will of braveness to live and die for the land are nonexistence. Because great nations recognize and amplify the contribution of their national characters, so they have good citizens who would wish to be remembered for their achievements. Liberia will only grow and prosper only and only if we change our orientation of hatred, insincerity, laziness and deep-rooted collective guilt to a more loving, patriotic, and regard our common patrimony as a progressive integral whole as a nation.
