UNMIL Refutes Claims Of One-Sidedness Courtesy: Inquirer News 04 March, 2010 The
Head of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) Ellen Margrethe
Loj on Wednesday stated that the incident that occurred in Lofa County
over the weekend that led to the death of at least four persons and
several others injured was based on unfounded rumors on the eve of the
incident.She however pointed out that this incident shows a clear
indication that there are still challenges in Liberia and more needs to
be done in building confidence among Liberians in every sector of the
country.The Mission boss who spoke in Monrovia on the outburst of
violence in Voinjama, Lofa County called on Liberians to be careful on
believing rumors. She said the Mission has a sizable force to deal with
the situation in Lofa County. She also dispelled rumors that the Mission
gave attention to the mosques and left the churches unattended.According to her, during the incident, one church was burnt, while two others were partially damaged, while one Mosque was also burnt and two others were partially damaged. She explained that UNMIL is presently assisting in the investigation of what led to the incident in Lofa County.Madam Loj flanked by two of her military officials stated that it is about time that Liberians decide if they want a country of peace that can focus on development. She said Liberians should do everything possible to focus on confidence building in every part of the country, or get ready to see recurrence of what happened in Lofa County. Madam Loj pointed out that there are challenges in ensuring that the security institutions in Liberia are intact. She named mobile and communication as some of those challenges that should be dealt with in the security institutions, since they are faster means by which security personnel could reach a crime scene.Madam Loj who is also the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Liberia said the progress report on Liberia is now available and the Secretary General has outlined peace and security especially as it relates to the rule of law as major challenges in the country.Madam Loj who is expected to depart Liberia next week for New York said the report also stressed the need for the establishment of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights. She reiterated that the Mission has been mandated to assist in the preparation of the 2011 national elections in Liberia. |
