Lofa Violence. Courtesy: Public Agenda 08 March, 2010 The
Concerned Mandingo Society of Liberia (COMASL) says it is deeply
saddened by the murder of a student in Lofa and said it sincerely hopes
to see the day when necessary killings are eradicated from the society.
Besides the said it also staunchly condemn, with vigor and tenacity, the
ugly incident that occurred in the County on Friday as a result of the
murder incident. In a press statement released yesterday, the group maintained that “This shameful incident has deeply saddened us as institution and has reminded us as Liberians about the difficulty of the task of healing and reconciliation in the postwar Liberia, as well as the profundity of the divide in which our unfortunate history has placed us. The Concerned Mandingo Society of Liberia says it is calling on all parties to conflict to exercise restraint and refrain from making inciting remarks in the media or in public. The group said is equally appealing to all media institutions throughout the country to be more responsible and objective in their reportage and coverage of incidents that are tribal or religious sensitive and to desist from headlines that carry potential stimulants for tribal or religious bigotries. According to the group, “Distortion of the facts, prejudicial remarks, tribal name calling, collective guilt, alienation, bigotry, discrimination, negative stereotyping and so forth are the malignancy that devour all efforts of healing, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence of people.” Nonetheless, the release quotes the group of extending thanks to the Government of Liberia for its swift response in arresting the ugly development. Besides, the group has also asked the president to set up an independent investigative committee to thoroughly and objectively investigate the incident and to punish the perpetrators severely so as to set deterrence for the recurrence of similar situation. As a an institution, the group said, it will also endeavor as usual to carry on civic education initiatives to help cement and foster everlasting peace and harmonious coexistence among all tribes and religions in Liberia. “We strongly recommend that a research be carried out to find ways of eradicating this sort of evil tendency once and for all from our cultures,” the release maintained. Meanwhile, the group concluded with a call on the national legislature to enact laws that will forestall mutual incitement to violence. “We are also calling on the legislators to enact a law that would outlaw all derisory remarks or statements in public about other tribes or religions that have the propensity to solicit angry reactions which in most cases lead to violence and conflict,” they emphasized. |
