Gov't Debunks Taylor's Testimony Courtesy: Liberia Observer July 20, 2009 MONROVIA,
The Government of Liberia has categorically dispelled testimony made by
former Liberian president Charles Taylor that President Ellen Johnson
Sirleaf was the 'main fundraiser' of the disbanded National Patriotic
Front of Liberia (NPFL) group to unseat former Liberian president, the
late Samuel K. Doe, with a revolution stage in December 1989. Clutus
Sieh, Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Information,
told reporters yesterday, July 16, 2009 at a regular press conference in
Monrovia that the testimony of Mr. Taylor implicating President Sirleaf
as the main fundraiser of the NPFL 'is a falsehood and a diabolical lie
meant to implicate the sitting President of Liberia'.Dep. Min. Sieh described Taylor's report as a calculated attempt to besmear Madam Sirleaf's character so as to put others into what he (Sieh) called 'deep ocean' that he (Taylor) 'is already in'. He told reporters that President Sirleaf was not surprised at ex-president Taylor because, according to him (Sieh), “Ellen knows where Taylor comes from in terms of character”. “Taylor is drowning into a well that he wants everyone to follow him. His statement is nothing but a falsehood,” Min. Sieh emphasized. He went on to say that Ellen was not moved by Taylor's testimony because she has a mandate to complete as leader elected by the Liberian people. He added that Liberian people deserved the best and as such, “the Government is doing all it can to bring about change for its people”. When asked about President Sirleaf's response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) final report, the Information Dep. Min. said the President was perusing the report and in a subsequent time she would respond. On Wednesday, July 15, 2009, Ex-president Taylor, who is facing charges of 11 counts in The Netherlands, accused President Sirleaf of being the main fundraiser of the disbanded NPFL rebel group that had been organized to unseat the government of the late president Samuel K. Doe. Taylor is currently in The Hague before a United Nations-backed Special Court established in Sierra Leone for violating international laws and laws against humanity. |
